Two- day workshop on application of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) in Tourism commenced on Tuesday at Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun. The workshop was organised by Uttarakhand Space Application Centre (USAC) and witnessed participation from various state line departments, academicians, scientist and young researchers from various centre and state government organisations.
On the occasion Director USAC Prof. MPS Bisht while welcoming the delegates, guests and other dignitaries highlighted the contribution of USAC in the field of application of space technology in the state during his welcome address. He said a dedicated team of administration and Scientists is working untiringly to make the geospatial information hub at the centre with latest available satellite imageries and information received from various line departments.
On the occasion Mr. Satpal Maharaj Hon. Tourism Minister, Government of Uttarakhand explicitly deliberated upon the importance of space technology in promotion of tourism in the hilly state like Uttarakhand and scope of tourism in human welfare and its great significance in the modern time. He appreciatedthe efforts of the Uttarakhand Space Application Centre for organising the seminar on a very relevant topic. Hon. Tourism Minister of the state Mr. Satpal Maharaj stressed upon the mapping of biodiversity rich areas, lakes, waterfalls, rafting areas and trekking routes available in the state for wide publicity of tourism sector. He has also emphasized upon not only to promote the tourism by various means but also need to educate tourist and local communities for its long term sustainability keeping the fragility of Himalaya in mind. Several un-song heroes of the hilly districts of the state, those are contributing in promotion of tourism by various ways were also felicitated by the Minister.
Sh. Chandi Prashad Bhatt, Padam Bhushan, Environmentalist said that if the Cultural, Social and Ecological diversity of the state can be projected properly will surely help in improving the life style and economy of the people residing here. In the workshop more than 10 subject officers from various sectors provided detailed information about how RS and GIS can be useful for promoting tourism in the state. On the occasion Dr. Narendra Singh, Scientific Advisor, Hon, Chief Minister Government discussed how space technology can be used to prepare the scaled maps on various themes. He discussed in detail about the newly prepared tourism map of Uttarakhand in GIS platform and scope of preparation of more detailed map for site specific areas.
In the workshop more than 10 scientist from various institutes deliver the lectures on aspects of tourism in Uttarakhand. In the workshop more than 200 participants comprising from state line departments, scientist and researchers from national and state organisations, universities have participated.
